Cafe Rouge Review

Last weekend I visited Cafe Rouge with family, not my usual choice to eat out at, but I was pleasantly surprised by the vegan options. Of course being a French restaurant meat, fish & cheese dominate the menu however they clearly label the vegan choices & aren’t just the typical boring salad & sorbet!!

Food: The food was fresh, decent portions with an abundance of flavour! Clearly labelled vegan or vegan option available on the menu, but no separate vegan menu available.

Service: Staff were very attentive, automatically gave us a jug of water (a massive thumbs up from me there haha), & they were generally friendly and helpful. The restaurant was clean & cosy, with french themed decor.

Price: Mains were around £13-15 & desserts £6-8.

I didn’t opt for a starter but the vegan options include Beetroot Tatin & Soupe de SaisonThe vegan mains include Vegetable Parmentier; Moroccan Vegetable Tagine; Spicy Chickpea Burger & Orchard Salad.

For mains I choose the Moroccan Tagine which was roasted courgette, carrots, butternut squash, baby spinach & chickpeas with toasted almonds & coriander chutney. All served with spiced coriander couscous.

The tagine was incredibly delicious. A touch of spice & packed with veggies & chickpeas all in a tomato based stew. The almonds added a wonderful crunch, however I didn’t find any chutney of any sort but not being a huge coriander lover that didn’t bother me too much. The couscous was tasty although a little dry & ‘out the packet’ like. But mixed with the flavours of the tagine it made for an incredible dish. Not boring in the slightest.

For dessert I was torn between the Tart Tatin & Rhubarb & Ginger Crumble both made vegan when they serve it with vegan ice cream! They also serve Sorbet & Vegan Ice Cream, but that’s a little boring for me. So I went for the crumble, which came in a cute ramkin dish, served piping hot! It had a layer of stewed rhubarb in a sticky, sweet jam-y sauce with a subtle hint of ginger, nothing too overpowering. With an oaty crumble on top served with vegan vanilla ice cream. This was utterly devine & I would go back everyday just to eat this again and again! Honestly one of the best desserts I’ve had! Everything you could want in a vegan crumble- a defo MUST-TRY if you ever visit.

Overall Cafe Rouge definitely surprised me with their vegan options. Creative, big on flavour & insanely delicious dishes, meaning I could thoroughly enjoy a french inspired meal out with family without feeling I was missing out at all.

Hope you enjoyed this review. Are you gonna try out Cafe Rouge’s vegan options soon?
